Responding to a nationwide surge in thefts of certain models of Hyundai and Kia vehicles, the Shaker Heights Police Department is providing Shaker residents and employees who own these vehicles with a free steering wheel locking system.

"A thief who sees one of these locks on a steering wheel is going to be likely to move on and look for a vehicle that's easier to steal," said Shaker Heights Police Chief Wayne Hudson. "We are happy to be able to provide these important deterrence devices."

To receive a locking system, drivers must:

  • Be a Shaker Heights resident or an employee of a Shaker Heights business
  • Come to the Shaker Heights Police Department at 3355 Lee Rd. between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. weekdays to request the lock, or flag down a Shaker Heights Police officer on patrol
  • Provide proof of ownership of a Kia or Hyundai in their name and sign a release form
  • Call the Shaker Heights Police Department at 216-491-1220 if they have questions

Locks are available while supplies last, on a first-come, first-served basis.
