[ARCHIVED] Shaker Heights Landmark Commission Presents the 2020 Preservation Awards

Eight Shaker Heights properties have earned Preservation Awards from the Shaker Heights Landmark Commission. The awards were presented in a special virtual presentation, featuring members of the Landmark Commission. (Scroll to the bottom of this announcement to view the presentation.)

The Commission established the Preservation Awards program in 1998 to celebrate those who preserve and improve Shaker Heights properties with particular commitment to their heritage, craftsmanship, original materials, and continuing potential as viable and inspiring structures. The following properties received recognition:

Retention of Original Materials

3320 Grenway Road. Stripped paint from the wood shingles on this 1924 home and re-stained a different color, resulting in a new look while preserving the original siding.

Exterior Restoration

2911 Paxton Road. Complete replacement of the exterior millwork on this 1928 Georgian home with hand-milled vinyl, resulting in maintenance-free trim that looks like the original.

3637 Winchell Road. Extensive renovation of the exterior of this 1931 Tudor duplex, including the installation of a new Tudor-style wooden awning for the side door. 

17650 Parkland Drive. Complete replacement of the wave-coursed cedar shake roof and cedar shake siding on this 1917 Shingle Style home, resulting in an exterior resembling its early-20th century conditions.

18520 Winslow Road. Complete renovation of the exterior of this 1926 home in the Winslow Road Historic District, including with new wood windows, front porch, driveway, garage, and much more. 

Excellence in Stewardship

18432 Lynton Road. Complete restoration of the garage on this 1925 home by the homeowners themselves, including the addition of 12 handmade leaded glass windows for the doors. 

Architecturally Appropriate Addition

18801 South Park Boulevard. Addition of a third garage space to the original two-car garage of this 1937 home, building off an existing stone wall and stone balustrade so that it appears as if it were always there. 

19100 South Woodland Road. Addition of a new rear entry to this 1925 home as part of a kitchen renovation by converting a window into a door and adding stairs leading to an existing stone patio.
