High temperatures are in the forecast all week. Residents in need of a cooling center can call 9-1-1. You will be connected with the Shaker Heights Fire Department, which will be facilitating these requests.
In this extreme heat, we are also considering the health and safety of City staff, including life guards at Thornton Park pool, who will take more frequent breaks, and those other employees who work outdoors and may cool off in air-conditioned City vehicles.
A National Weather Service Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 pm Friday, with heat index values of 100 to 104 degrees expected at times this week with variability each day due to clouds and scattered showers and storms, especially early in the week.
NWS recommended actions:
- Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun.
- Check up on relatives and neighbors.
- Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
- Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
- Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. Call 9-1-1.
An additional reminder: City offices are closed on Wednesday, June 19, in celebration of the Juneteenth holiday. There will be a one-day trash delay in effect Wednesday through Friday.
