Updated version of the Hildana Park site plan

Project Overview

The City of Shaker Heights is collaborating with landscape architects and artists to design improvements and new amenities at Hildana Park. Improvements include improved landscaping, adding new amenities such as benches, a new connecting path, resurfacing of existing paths, a little free library, plaza upgrades, and new public art that will reflect the people, history, and culture of the Moreland neighborhood. View the public art renderings (PDF).

In Spring 2025, community workshops were held with the designers and residents to share their ideas during the design process. Design was finalized in late spring 2025 and construction is expected to begin summer 2025 and be completed in the fall. (See the schedule below for timeframe and public meetings).

Existing conditions + Background

The Moreland neighborhood is a densely developed residential neighborhood that consists of single- and two-family homes. Access to high-quality parks is important to the neighborhood where residents of all ages use the park. In 2023, the City assessed the condition of public art citywide; the existing sculpture in Hildana Park was the highest priority for reconstruction or replacement. The existing public art, “Strength in Unity”, urgently needs to be replaced. In an August 2024 questionnaire completed by Moreland residents, 79% of respondents preferred removing the existing deteriorated art and replacing it with art that reflects the neighborhood’s history, culture, and people. More on the neighborhood’s history can be found here: https://shakerlibrary.org/local-history/research/moreland-neighborhood-history/
